baking love...

The 1st August Sunday Challenge at The Studio Challenges blog is to create a layout with misting, inking or painting - using items from around your home as masks. I am loving getting messy with my layouts at the moment, so I had to try this one. I had some photos of recent baking exploits waiting to be scrapped, and they provided the perfect inspiration for masks (click photo to see it larger):


I used a sieve first of all, and spritzed it with watered down white acrylic paint, so it looked like flour had been sifted over it. I then laid down a spoon, a whisk, and a gingerbread man cookie cutter to do the next layer, but the gingerbread man was the only item that made a really good impression out of these three. I had masking-taped over him to stop the paint going through the middle, so I could journal inside afterwards. For this layer of spritzing I used yellow ochre acrylic, again watered down, and some Tattered Angels gold glimmer mist. The combination means it looks like a dusting of ground ginger:

The journaling is slightly tricky to read because of the white acrylic on the base layer, but I kind of like this, as it looks like my recipe books which always end up with ingredients smudged across the instructions! Journaling reads:

'I really love baking - whether it's cakes or bread or biscuits. It's fun testing out new recipes, and even if they don't always go completely to plan, there's always scrummy bits to salvage! I think Alex enjoys my baking hobby too, especially if he gets to eat leftover cake or cookie mix from the bowl! Yum yum! xxx'

I did try to make an embellishment out of a paper muffin case as well, but it was too big for the layout and I didn't have a smaller one, as I've got silicone cases now for fairy cakes. Instead I crimped some white card to go behind the title, so it's the same sort of texture as a paper case:

I painted the strawberry with watercolour paints, as I didn't have any strawberry or cupcake embellies in my stash, which I was a bit suprised about! I even edged the small photos with white acrylic paint too, so this layout really did have a messy process, and it was soooo much fun! xxx
